A Glasgow mum is appealing for witnesses after her bakery’s window was smashed and the yobs made off with a stale display cake.

Creative Cakes in Glasgow’s southside on Clarkston Road was vandalised in the early morning hours of December 13.

Owner of the bakery, Rhona Wilson discovered the broken heavy-duty window on Friday morning, the same day of her daughter’s birthday.

“They had used a big tree branch to smash through this window - it is supposed to be unbreakable.

“Later on we had realised that they had actually pinched one of the cakes from the window display.”

She added: “The thing is that it is a very very old cake. So good luck to them if they want to eat it.”

The display window cakes are usually made of polystyrene but the cake was cut by mistake and happened to be the right shape for the planned Christmas window display.

She is hopeful somebody witnessed the incident and could offer more information for an investigation.

“I would say it would also prevent somebody from eating that cake and giving themselves some food poisoning but I don’t really care about that,” she joked in good nature.

“As long as they don’t bring it back to complain to us. You never know, stranger things have happened before.”

The bedrooms in the residential buildings do not look towards the main road and so far none of the neighbours have reported seeing anything.

In a statement police were not able to confirm the specific time of the incident. A police spokeswoman added: “"Enquiries are ongoing into a report of the window of a business premises in Clarkston Road, Glasgow, being vandalised between 5.30pm on Thursday, December 12, and 8am on Friday, December 13."

The Creative Cakes owner added: “I had hoped during the day and during Saturday that maybe one of the neighbours would have come in and said that they had heard something or seen something.

“Even to just pinpoint a time.”

According to Rhona, Creative Cakes is not the only store that has been vandalised in the area, she added: “I know for a fact, there have been a few of the shop windows on our side of the road that have been smashed in the recent past.”

“They just seem to enjoy smashing the windows of small businesses.”

The damage will cost the business up to £1000 to repair and the window has been sealed so the bakery can continue selling cake through the festive period.

The bakery owner, Rhona added: “This time of year we could do without it because we are busy enough.”

Creative Cakes has been selling baked goods on Clarkston Road for 32 years and it had not seen any problems in recent years.

“Right at the beginning, we had a couple of breakages in the glass. But we have never had any problems since way back then.”

“We looked it up it was over 20 years ago when we last had a breakage.”

She expressed concerns about emptying the display and boarding up the window and added: “I hope people don’t think we are closing up because it just looks so bare”.

But Rhona added: “It’s just a bit of a shame at this time of the year, we could do without it.

“We just have to repair it and move on.”
