A LORRY burst into flames on the M8 today and closed part road for more than two hours. 

Emergency services rushed to J22 eastbound near Cessnock after the truck caught fire at around 1.45pm. 

Local reports claimed witnesses heard a "massive explosion" as the vehicle was engulfed by flames.

Firefighters tackled the blaze for around two hours as police directed traffic and shut down a section of the road. 

However, no one was hurt in the incident and the M8 reopened at around 4pm after being cleared. 

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Around 1.45 pm on Thursday, January 28, 2021, police and emergency services were called to a report of a lorry on fire on the slip road of the M8 J22 Eastbound. 

"Fire extinguished, no injury to anyone and the road re-opened around 4pm.  No further police action."

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service earlier said: "We were alerted at 1.38pm on Thursday, January 28, to reports of an HGV on fire at M74, J1 heading southbound near to Tradeston slip road.

"Operations Control mobilised three appliances to the scene where crews are currently working to extinguish the fire.

"There are no reported casualties at this time."
