A motorway south of Glasgow was subject to closures in both directions this morning following a vehicle fire.

Traffic Scotland reported that the incident occurred on the M77 travelling southbound between junction 5 and junction 6 at around 2am.

The motorway has since reopened with all lanes cleared.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "We received calls to the M77 between junction 5 and junction 6 at around 12.48am to reports of a HGV trailer on fire. 

"We mobilised two appliances to the scene and the fire was extinguished. 

"We stayed in attendance until the vehicle was recovered at around 7.55am."

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Around 12.50am on Saturday, July 3, 2021, police received report of the trailer of a lorry on fire on the M77 southbound at junction 6 near Kingswell.

"The fire was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and no-one was injured.

"The road was closed for around eight and a half hours and re-opened about 9.30am."
