A major gym has closed its spa pools due to rising costs.

Nuffield Health has announced the closure of its jacuzzis across the autumn and winter months due to the "significant" energy they use.

The decision has been made to conserve energy, reduce costs and be able to keep other leisure facilities open to members.

Nuffield Health operates 114 health and fitness facilities across Scotland, including four in Glasgow, and there are currently 72 jacuzzis across their venues.

A Nuffield Health spokesperson said: “Our gyms use a significant amount of energy and to meet rising costs we’ve made the decision to temporarily close our spa pools (jacuzzis) for the autumn and winter months as they are energy intensive.

"This will allow us to keep our swimming pools, steam rooms and saunas open as we know our member value and benefit from these services.

"Alongside reducing costs, we also have ambitious carbon net zero targets, and we are working hard to be more energy efficient in the long-term by investing in initiatives that will reduce our consumption.”

It is understood that if members want to cancel memberships based on the closure, Nuffield will honour these immediately and offer refunds to members on a case-by-case basis.
