Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has revealed he and his recruitment staff are continuing to look at players to improve their squad ahead of the Premiership return.

The Ibrox manager has been poring through footage of potential new signings alongside sporting director Ross Wilson with the hopes of unearthing new stars to help close the gap further on champions Celtic.

With the coronavirus pandemic showing little signs of letting up any time soon, Gerrard admits he does not expect anything to happen imminently. He also acknowledges that, financially, there are more important issues to consider.

But that hasn't stopped he and his staff from scouting players. "We're using time from a recruitment point of view to look at players and see how we can move forward and get better," he told talkSPORT. "We have been busy, making calls, having Zoom chats and trying to make the best of our time.

"We haven't stopped since we've gone into the pandemic, we've been as busy as ever watching players in every position, turning long lists into shortlists. One thing is for sure is that I won't stop trying to make this Rangers team as good as I can.

"We have to see how it all plays out, all managers at all clubs are going to be in a similar situation. I'm in daily contact with the board and they're as hungry and ambitious as I am. There will be no pressure from my point of view, we certainly respect the position we're in, it's a very unique and strange time. Finances are going to be affected so we respect and appreciate that.

"But we're all as ambitious from top to bottom at Rangers, to keep trying to move things forward, to improve and get better because it's the only way we can find success."

Gerrard still has not been able to pinpoint exactly why his side capitulated following their return from Dubai at their winter training camp. Sitting just two points behind Celtic with a game in hand before the break, Gers crumbled and found themselves a whopping 13 points behind their rivals before the suspension.

Peppered between their disappointing league form as the season wore on were fantastic Europa League results against Braga. But their continental performances only confused the manager even more about their domestic slump. "The first six months we were outstanding, consistent and really happy with where we were," Gerrard added.

"Then after the break there were some inconsistencies that I need to reflect on the why and how, to make sure it never happens again. It's an area where we, as staff, are all looking for solutions on. I'd be a liar if I said I had the formula or the answers.

"The strange thing was, in the middle of it, we were still finding performances against the likes of Braga who are a fantastic team, doing so well in one competition but finding inconsistency in another. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that when that does happen you need to find better players, keep making the squad as strong as you can. We came extremely close to success this year in the League Cup and we've had success in the Europa League.

"The league has been disappointing so it's my job to find solutions to hopefully have the chance to finish this season as strong as we can and move into the next."
