GOT TO TAKE CHANCES

Celtic were right in the contest up until the first goal and controlled large parts of the game as they took their high-pressing tactics to Real Madrid. The Scottish champions deserve credit for their performance, but ultimately at the top, Ange Postecoglou’s side have to take their chances. Liel Abada had two efforts in the first half, while Callum McGregor and Daizen Maeda also had chances before the scoring opened. Each of the aforementioned were clear-cut chances and Postecoglou will be disappointed that his side never took advantage.

FITNESS TELLING

Some questioned whether Celtic would take their high-pressing style into the Champions League and they certainly did just that. The multi-ball system was in full flow at Parkhead, and the team were sharp to look for the quick option from the off. Real Madrid knew they were in a game and there were periods when the Champions League holders had to dig in and defend in the first half. It was a monumental effort to go in level at the interval, and it was obvious that fitness would be an issue in the second period. Postecoglou’s side came into the game following a victory over Rangers at the weekend, and it was telling at times in the second period. The win over their rivals was energy-sapping, and Postecoglou may need to rotate further as they continue in the competition.

CELTIC CAN COMPETE

They have been dominant domestically of late, but there were still questions regarding their capabilities in the Champions League. Celtic can take great heart from their display and showed they can compete against the very best in Europe. They had four great chances to take the lead in the game and if they had, the result could have been so different. Shakhtar Donetsk and RB Leipzig are still to come for the Hoops, and if they put on a similar display to their first-half performance against Real Madrid, then they will have a real chance of picking up points. Plenty of positives to take.
