Celtic hero Frank McAvennie has backed ex-Hoops striker Moussa Dembele to "save" Everton's season.

The Frenchman has been linked with a move to the Premier League side, who have now parted ways with manager Frank Lampard, during the January transfer window.

He scored 51 goals and provided 18 assists in 94 games for the Scottish champions before departing for Lyon in 2018.

The 26-year-old has remained at the Ligue 1 side ever since but it looks like he could be moving on soon as his contract is up in the summer.

And McAvennie has also detailed why he expected more from the 26-year-old after he moved on from the Scottish champions

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “I thought he was going to end up at Barcelona or Real Madrid, Man City or Man United.

“I thought he was going for the top, I really thought he was that good. He took the easy route back to France.

"I think Everton fans will like him if he gets back to the form he had at Celtic. It does not really look as if he is progressing his career.

“Going to Everton he will score goals."

Everton are currently 19th in the Premier League and have only taken 15 points from 20 games so far this season.

A move during this window would provide the Bhoys with one last chance to cash in on the reported sell-on fee they have installed in Dembele's contract.
