Rapper Busta Rhymes has been charged with assault after allegedly throwing a protein drink at a gym employee.

The 43-year-old star, whose real name is Trevor Tahiem Smith Jr, was arrested after an incident at Steel Gym in the Chelsea neighbourhood of Manhattan.

A spokesman for New York Police Department said the Brooklyn-born rapper and the worker became involved in a dispute that escalated.

He said Rhymes allegedly threw a cardboard container of strawberry protein drink at the man, hitting him on the head.

A lawyer for Rhymes, known for songs such as Gimme Some More, Fire It Up and Dangerous, said he is confident Rhymes will beat the second degree assault charges.
