Kanye West’s headline slot at Glastonbury last year caused a huge amount of controversy before he had even taken to the stage.

News that he had been chosen for the esteemed slot on the famous Pyramid stage was met with disdain by some festival-goers who felt the move was a departure from the traditional Glastonbury line-up.

An online petition urging fans to “prevent this musical injustice now” was launched, and while it managed to garner more than 130,000 signatures, it did not stop Kanye taking to the stage.

He is not the only musician to be cloaked in controversy. Here are a few more controversial acts that have made headlines in relation to Glastonbury.

Jay Z

Having Jay Z as a headline act in 2008 did not go down well with some music fans – especially with Liam Gallagher. The Oasis star hit out at having “hip hop at Glastonbury”.

The singer told the BBC: “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. If you start to break it then people aren’t going to go. I’m sorry, but Jay Z? No chance.”

Jay Z responded by walking onto the stage at Glastonbury with a guitar strapped around his neck – playing Oasis’s hit Wonderwall.

Beyonce

The Single Ladies singer faced a backlash from Glastonbury fans in 2011, as people felt her addition to the bill might lead to the “popification” of the event.

Beyonce ended up receiving rave reviews for her performance, with The Guardian’s music critic even awarding her five stars.

Metallica

The heavy metal band were the headline act causing waves in 2014. They became the first metal group to ever headline the popular festival held at Worthy Farm.

Fans started a petition to stop them performing due to lead singer James Hetfield’s association with hunting. Metallica didn’t shy away from the controversy and poked fun at the criticism during their introductory video at the festival.

The video, a short film titled Glastallica, was directed by Julien Temple and featured an intro of an expert from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, and then featured a fox hunt. Near the end the four members of the band are revealed dressed as bears, shooting at the hunters.

Kylie Minogue

When the pop princess was introduced as a headline act in 2005, many felt she was “too pop” for the festival.

However, Kylie’s Glastonbury moment wasn’t to be that year as she had to pull out of the festival after being diagnosed with breast cancer. She later performed as a guest of the Scissor Sisters in 2010.
