They were drawn together by a love for Biffy Clyro – but it took the Fresh Prince of Bel Air to set Glasgow rockers MakethisRelate on their way.

And now the quartet is hoping that it's their lives that'll be flipped and turned upside down.

They're headlining the ABC2 tomorrow, aiming to build on the experience they've gained through releasing two EPs and supporting bands like Flood of Red and teen heartthrobs Twenty Twenty.

The band bonded over Will Smith's 90s TV comedy, according to their singer Kevin Walls.

"We kept jamming the riff from, Killing In The Name, by Rage Against The Machine at one of our first rehearsals, but I couldn't sing the vocal part, at all," the 21-year-old says.

"So I just thought I'd start the rap from the Fresh Prince, and lay it on top instead – we were just messing about.

"Then, at our first gig, there were about 10 people there, and we thought let's go for it, and we played it.

"We're like that, just making ourselves laugh as well as writing tunes, so it was a moment where we bonded."

Those comedy days are long gone, though and MakethisRelate is fast becoming one of the names to watch on the city scene, thanks to their snappy, pop-punk tunes.

Kevin met the rest of the group, guitarist David McErlane, bassist Aidan Scott and drummer David Kelly, while studying at Cumbernauld College.

He had already been playing his solo material when he discovered that he shared a liking for acts such as Biffy Clyro and Blink 182 with the others, which eventually led to MakethisRelate forming in 2008. They've already seen their fan base grow, thanks to gigging around Scotland and the release of two EPs, One More Second Chance and Pick Your Side.

Now they're taking another step forward, by touring the UK for the first time, with shows slated for Newcastle, Liverpool and London, among other cities.

They'll be joined on the road by Birmingham band Page 44, and the group are enthusiastic about the tour.

Kevin says: "Since we've been in a band we've been in awe of bands going on tour, getting to go to different places and doing what they want to do, so we couldn't believe it when the tour came together for us.

"It's still sinking in, but it's a dream come true for us – we've been gearing up for this over the past two years."

And Thursday's gig at the ABC2 is another exciting opportunity for the four-piece.

They previously headlined the venue last year, but Kevin expects tomorrow's gig to be even better.

"We launched our second EP there. As the gig's part of a tour this time, there's a lot more pressure, but hopefully it'll be more fun too – when we played there last time, lots of people didn't know the songs, but they'll now hopefully be able to sing along."

The group themselves are having a good time, but it's not all been fun. Kevin admits that the band have already seen some the cynical side of the music biz, thanks to gigging with some bands who've only been out to make money rather than quality music.

Such experiences will form the basis of the band's next single, currently titled Sugar Glass, which they hope to release in the autumn.

"We're not doing an EP this year, just a single, and then we'll work on a bigger release for next year," says Kevin, who hails the likes of American indie act Death Cab For Cutie as his own, personal inspirations.

"We're covering new ground, the first couple of releases were based around relationships, breaking up and the usual issues.

"But this is more about where we came from as a band and how things have shaped our band, and some disillusionment with the music industry.

"We've learned more about the business side – it's not all glitz and glamour.

"We've played with bands who are just about making money rather than pleasing their fans and that's not a route we'd go down."

Among the more interesting gigs the group has played was opening for teen trio Twenty Twenty. MakethisRelate supported the Cambridge band when they headlined King Tut's, providing a memorable experience, for various reasons.

"It opened our eyes to the other side of the music industry," says Kevin, in regards to the fact that Twenty Twenty have major label backing them, and an assortment of managers.

"The gig was brilliant though, and we had such a good time.

"We got to show our music, to a sold out Tut's crowd, so that's an experience we will remember for being the best live gig we've ever played.

"It was brilliant to make so many new fans – and we had a blast."
