WASHDAY blues were all part of the hustle and bustle of Glasgow in the days before most families had a washing machine at home.

Mums, often with the weans in tow, would bundle up their dirty linen and head for the 'steamie', or local wash-house.

With the dirty clothes tied up like a 'tinker's bundle', old prams were often used to transport the load.

Here at the old Oatlands steamie, the air was thick with steam and the scent of bleach and carbolic soap.

The wee woman at the front has wrapped her head in a scarf to stop the moist air from turning her hair curly.

The Oatland Baths and Wash-House, in Wolsley Street, also offered local families the chance to have a long, hot bath.

The building, along with most of the surrounding tenments, was demolished in 2005.
