It's not every day you get a bona fide Hollywood legend coming to Glasgow.

So no wonder there was quite a crowd when Charlton Heston, star of Ben Hur and The 10 Commandments, swapped his chariot for an open-top car to launch what was then the new Cannon cinema in Sauchiehall Street.

The star, accompanied by his son Fraser, was unveiling a plaque to commemorate the previous occupier of the site, Hengler's Circus, and also to promote his own new release, Treasure Island.

Hengler's Circus stood on Sauchiehall Street from 1905 to 1924, and could boast a seating capacity of 1200, plus Glasgow's first-ever revolving stage, which could even be flooded for aquatic performances.

Today, the site is occupied by the ABC music venue but the name of Hengler's Circus lives ... There is a pub of that name nearby.
