IN JULY 1964, there seemed little to do but sit and wait for customers in Glasgow's Fruit Market.
But while all might appear calm at the market, a row was in full flow over the future of the site.
Glasgow Corporation planning committee was accused of "complete and hopeless inconsistency", with "an Alice in Wonderland scale of values" in their consideration of the city's planning needs.
The claims came on the final day of a public inquiry when Mr JA Dick QC summed up the case on behalf of site owner JK Peters and Co Ltd, who had been refused permission by the corporation to develop the site at Prospecthill Road as a food distribution centre.
The corporation, if they acquired the site wanted to turn it into football pitches.
Corporation assistant chief planning officer George Gavin assured the inquiry that a new Gallowgate fruit market would be open by 1968 or 1969 and concerns about traffic congestion were countered by motorway and ring road plans.
Times were changing but for this man, it seems the brave new world can wait.
