The big ships used to sail up the Clyde, but smaller boats could also make user of the Forth and Clyde Canal. And this one was part of a flotilla of more than 15 boats that sailed into Spiers Wharf, near Port Dundas, Glasgow, in 1993 for the first time in 30 years. The canal had been shut in 1963, but the latest reopening of Applecross Street Basin had been made possible by the removal of an electricity cable at the bottom of the canal. That enabled the opening of a 12-mile stretch from Kirkintilloch to Spiers Wharf.
This was the bright front of the Holmes McDougall book shop when it opened new three-storey premises in Buchanan Street in July 1971, just next door to its previous store. It also sold stationery.
