SHARON Osborne unveiled a dramatic new platinum white look after 18 years of high-maintenance red that probably involved weekly trips to the hair salon.

But for those of us not quite ready to embrace the grey, what is the best option?

I generally favour an all over root tint with a smattering of highlights on the crown to help conceal the re-growth for as long as possible.

However, colour expert Maxine McCarthur of Ellen Conlin on Hyndland Road suggests that isn’t always the best option for those that don’t have a huge amount of grey to cover or are not naturally dark.

Glasgow Times:

Fresh from styling models at London Fashion Week, Maxine has a good look and feel of the texture of my hair before deciding on the best course of action.

It's not in the best condition right now - dry and frizzy and according to Maxine, it’s the weather that’s to blame and the salt on the roads could also be contributing to the damage.

She says a softer and more lasting option for me might be a full head of highlights with a smattering of darker tones to add contrast which should hopefully give me a bit more time between salon visits.

As my hair is naturally quite fair she says there is no need to use bleach to lift the tone and says she would always try to avoid the hard stuff if the hair is not in tip top condition.

Salon boss Ellen checks in to give her expert opinion - there is always a double consultation at the salon - and agrees with the plan.

Maxine offers plenty of hair tips while she expertly places the foils and suggests I’d really suit my hair in a jaw-length bob to emphasis my cheekbones.

I’m not quite ready for such a dramatic change so I settle on a few more layers to encourage the natural movement.

Glasgow Times:

She finishes the look with gorgeous straightner-styled waves and advises me to buy a wide toothed comb to brush it through at home to avoid the Little House on the Prairie look.

Glasgow Times:

I’m delighted with the colour, it’s soft and natural and best of all, the condition hasn’t been compromised.
