POPULAR Instagrammer “Glasgow Guinness Man” has been making ripples on the city’s bar scene with his reviews of pints of the black stuff.

Here, the secret reviewer shares his top five places in Glasgow that offer a pint of the best Guinness.

5. Lismore, Dumbarton Road

A great old bar that retains its “traditional pub” status and great location in between Partick and the student world of the West End and the University of Glasgow. Lovely, wooden features and an extensive range of malt whisky, this has that cosy, Scottish Highlands feel - and they also serve a fine pint of Guinness.

When you see those real ales on tap, you can be rest-assured they treat the pouring of a pint with the utmost respect - and the Guinness is a great one.

They will also ask you a very important question - “regular or extra cold? - as a proper Guinness pub should.

4. The Laurieston, Bridge Street

The pub’s deliberately kept its old fashioned decor, and it’s what I would imagine what it must have been like drinking in Glasgow in the sixties. Excellent Guinness. Again, it’s all about knowledgeable and passionate bar staff who take care of all the important details to make sure the pint tastes as it should; black velvety, creamy goodness. It’s one of the very best pubs in Glasgow

3. Jinty McGuinty’s, Ashton Lane

Voted the “Best Irish Bar” by the Scottish Entertainment & Hospitality Awards last year, this place really needs to deliver top-notch pints, which it always does.

There are loads of old Guinness signs and memorabilia, and trad music sessions both in the evening and afternoons at the weekend. The guys behind the bar also pride themselves in pouring great Guinness. Taking a first gulp in there with the music in the background almost feels like you’re in Dublin and not Ashton Lane.

2. The Tollbooth Bar, Saltmarket

When a pub decks itself out with wall-to-wall Guinness artwork/old advertising/barrells/bottles, you really hope that the actual pint lives up to the decor - and it does.

It’s a small, lively, old school pub, with live music almost every night (with a heavy emphasis on Trad Irish), and bar staff who don’t keep you waiting.

They keep the Guinness flowing as it should, and you get a true “Irish” bar atmosphere, without the pretence.

The pint itself is consistently smooth and creamy, and one of the cheapest in town as well.

1. MJ Heraghty Bar, Pollokshaws Road

The best Guinness in Glasgow can be found here - and it’s a proper pub. The owners really do take pride in serving the best Guinness. They even boast about it on their website.

When bar staff make the effort to make sure you get a great pint, you know you’re getting the best.

From meticulously cleaning the lines regularly (a very important process when dealing with any pint, but in particular, Guinness), to pouring it with expertise, Heraghty’s in number one.

Speaking to the Evening Times about the popularity of his page, the reviewer said: “I started the Instagram to name and shame pubs that were serving poor quality pints.

“Also, after coming back from Dublin a few years ago, I found pubs in Glasgow were serving Guinness as good as there.

“So far, it’s got a fair amount of regular fans, and some people have even let me know they’ve followed my recommendations, which is brilliant.

“I hoped it would catch the attention of fellow Guinness enthusiasts and it seems to be doing that, so far.”
