Review: Five stars

ELVIS Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins all in the one room is enough to make any music fan combust.

And there is no doubt that excitment was felt in Glasgow's King Theatre tonight as the gathering of rock'n'roll legends is the starting point for Million Dollar Quartet, making it an instant hit with musical theatre fans.

This one moment in rock'n'roll history is captured beautifully in the production which showcases a jukebox of hits and the talent of actors capable of delivering a performance of legendary stars in a respectful way.

The story is set on December 4, 1956 when Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley assemble at the Sun Record recording studio in Memphis, Tennessee.

The quartet all began their careers in music thanks to recording impresario Sam Philips played by Jason Donovan who owns the studio, and during that one gathering of the men, they begin a jamming session.

Through the songs and dialogue, each of the legendary stars give the audience a snapshot into their hopes, fears, dreams and struggles at that time.

And with hits including Folsom Prison Blues, Hound Dog and Great Balls of Fire performed, the musical is a pot of some of rock'n'roll's greatest tunes.

Providing the laughs is Jerry Lee Lewis played by Martin Kaye while Elvis Presley, potrayed by Ross William Wild, has the sex appeal and moves worthy of the King.

The pair were the stand-out stars of the quartet while Donovan made his music mogul personna likeable with the audience showing empathy towards him.

As a music fan, you feel this is a moment you wanted to be part of. Given that the only evidence of the session was a recording and photograph, there was no other way to recreate it other than this musical which does just that in spectacular style.

Elvis and some of the show's other stars might have long left the building but Million Dollar Quartet takes you back to time when life was much simplier and music was part of a movement, in fact it was everything.

Catch Million Dollar Quartet at The King's Theatre until Saturday.
