Police have shut down more than 60 Scots cannabis farms in the last 12 months.

Graeme Pearson, head of the Scottish Crime and Drugs Enforcement Agency, revealed each drug factory was capable of housing up to 1000 plants, and producing around £100,000 worth of cannabis.

The Class C drug is being grown in homes or business properties, and Mr Pearson linked the rise in production to its reclassification from Class B in 2004.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith is to consider reversing the move.

Mr Pearson said: "It is not surprising the public misunderstood the reclassification message. They began to think cannabis was OK.

"As a result, we have gone from zero cultivation of industrial-sized cannabis factories in Scotland a year ago, to 66 today."

Cannabis-growing equipment seized by police is sent to Africa, to help cultivate vegetables instead.
