SUPERMARKET giant Morrisons could face trouble - for allowing noisy builders to work in the middle of the night at a new store.

Angry residents flooded East Renfrewshire council's switchboard as construction workers made a racket until 1am in a battle to finish the Giffnock development on time.

Environmental health workers and police were called to the site at Fenwick Road last Friday morning following dozens of complaints about noise levels.

Planning laws state all construction work should cease at 7pm. Council officers and police demanded builders leave the site at 2am and told them to return at 7.30am.

However, residents claim the firm also broke this agreement and say staff were back on site at 6am.

Stephen Fyfe, 42, who lives next to the development, is furious the supermarket breached noise laws and is among the residents who complained.

He said: "The builders were using some sort of equipment for cutting through blocks. The police and the council were out three times."

A spokesman for East Renfrewshire Council said: "Our environmental health officers received a number of complaints about noise levels. Planning laws state construction work must cease by 7pm.

"There is a possibility the company will be fined."

The store, which is due to open on February 17, will replace the existing supermarket on Fenwick Road, to make way for four-storey flats with shops on the ground floor.

A Morrisons spokesman said: "We are aware of the rules and regulations surrounding building works, however at the time in question, the Morrisons store in Giffnock was still under ownership of Miller Construction."

A spokesman for Miller Construction said: "Due to exceptional weather conditions prior to the handover of the new store, it was necessary on this occasion to work late in order to deliver the store on time.

"We apologise for any inconvenience."
