MOTHERWELL boss Mark McGhee feels his players tried too hard to impress in their 3-1 CIS Cup second-round win over Raith Rovers at Fir Park.

A Ross McCormack goal and an injury-time strike from Chris Porter sealed victory for the SPL side.

Derek Carcary had earlier cancelled out Brian McLean's opener and the game was tied 1-1 going into the last quarter.

McGhee made six changes to the side which registered a third league victory of the season against Gretna last Saturday, and said: "The quality of our passing wasn't great and they played to their strengths and put pressure on us with their set-pieces.

"I thought centre-halves Brian McLean and William Kinniburgh dealt with it well but at times they overplayed and got a bit embarrassed, but they are trying to please me so it's about getting the balance."

Dundee United manager Craig Levein believes the club are about to see the best of Willo Flood after the midfielder's fine show in their 2-1 win over Ross County put them into Monday's third-round draw.

Flood was United's most creative player and Levein praised the former Man City player. He said: "The most pleasing thing other than the result was the performance of Willo. I've said he has been slow to get up to speed with the rest of the players due to various things. But he has shown on the ball he is a really good, creative player and I was pleased for him.

"That was his best performance for us so far and he can only get better.

"In fact, he was our best player.

"It is also great that our supporters can see him play like that and know that he wants to do desperately well for us."

United opened the scoring with a Noel Hunt penalty but Andrew Barrowman levelled it, before Jordan Robertson, on-loan from Sheffield United, volleyed the winner four minutes from time.

Meanwhile, Kilmarnock boss Jim Jefferies has fresh injury worries ahead of their SPL clash with Aberdeen on Saturday.

Danny Invincibile and Garry Locke both limped out of Tuesday's 3-0 CIS Cup win at Peterhead and are rated doubtful.
