THE weekend spotlight may have shone on the Citylink Scottish Cup fifth round ties, but a number of Saturday league encounters took place that look likely to impact on the various Stagecoach promotion and relegation issues.

In the Super Premier Division, for example, Bellshill Athletic picked up a crucial three points in their fight for survival after Robert Coulter and Martin Lauchlan netted the goals in a 2-0 victory over bottom markers Kilsyth Rangers .

The crunch clash had been tagged as a must-win for the Duncansfield club whose chances of avoiding the drop must be considered remote at best.

Now the relegation focus is set to centre around who will be their falling companions.

In this respect, Bellshill's ongoing revival is pulling the likes of Arthurlie and even fifth- top Neilston into the mix.

However, Shotts Bon Accord, currently occupying second bottom spot on the back of four consecutive league losses, are arguably feeling the pressure more.

And their plight has been hampered further by the news one of their best players, Kevin Brown, will not play again this season after tragically breaking his leg during the 1-0 Citylink Cup defeat against Bathgate Thistle.

One flight down, Super First promotion rivals Vale of Clyde and East Kilbride Thistle were both lamenting dropping two points in a 2-2 Fullarton Park stalemate.

Jags led twice led through Paul Bain and a Bryan Morrison own goal only to be pegged back each time by Brian Johnston and Thomas Sinclair.

Their twin slip-ups were capitalised upon by the Alan McTurk-steered Kilwinning Rangers who edged to within a point of fourth-top Thistle thanks to an emphatic 4-2 triumph over basement strugglers Maryhill .

The spectre of back-to- back relegation seasons is undoubtedly looming over Lochburn Park.

Even more so in the light of drop zone rivals Renfrew opening up a seven-point advantage with a 4-1 defeat of an already doomed looking Johnstone Burgh .

Central District First Division promotion hopefuls Port Glasgow and Cumbernauld United failed to make any headway on tabletoppers Lanark United when sharing the 1-1 spoils at Ravenscraig Park.

At the other end of the table, Dunipace may yet regret losing out 4-3 at home to bottom side St Rochs, particularly as Derek Barron's men missed the chance to leapfrog Larkhall Thistle and Blantyre Vics in the standings after their fellow basement rivals drew 1-1 at Castle Park .

St Anthonys eased their relegation fears thanks to Stevie McMullen and Brian Henderson (2) goals bringing a 3-1 Govan derby victory over Benburb.

Newly atop the Second Division pile thanks to a 2-1 success over Wishaw are Forth Wanderers.

Coming up on their shoulders, however, are Cambuslang Rangers for whom Keith Ogilvie netted the only goal against Stonehouse Violet.

Meanwhile, SJFA bosses have moved to fill the gap left by my recent stepping down as Scotland Juniors manager.

It's believed the new man in charge for the forthcoming Umbro Quadrangular Tournament in the Isle of Man will be ex-Tayport boss Keith Burgess who steered the East Region club to Scottish Junior Cup success in 2005.

Elsewhere, several brave souls braved the freezing conditions last night to take in a couple of Junior friendlies.

Recent Pollok signing Martin McGarvey marked his first appearance in the black and white colours with one of the goals in a 5-0 defeat of Benburb at Tinto Park where Davie Turnbull and Robert Downs weighed in with scoring braces .

And across city at their state of the art Springburn complex, Petershill ran out 2-0 winners over St Anthonys. New Scotland boss George Burley and SFA chief executive Gordon Smith will be pulling the names from the hat at the Citylink Scottish Junior Cup Quarter Final draw scheduled for a week today at Hampden Park at noon.
