IT'S arguably the only place in Glasgow's East End where people happily hand over £2.50 for a bacon butty.

But this is no ordinary bacon butty - it's a morning roll with Ramsay's bacon'.

Cafe Tibo, in Dennistoun, could never be classed as an average East End greasy-spoon.

The food and drink is so upmarket and surroundings so chic, Glasgow's rich and famous often pop in and it is now in the running to be named Britain's best cafe.

Within two years of its launch, Tibo has already been named Scotland's Best Cafe/Bar by a UK style magazine.

And it is now poised to scoop the UK title in the same category of the Theme Bar and Restaurant Awards.

Owners David Skilling and Malcolm MacKenzie will attend an awards ceremony in London on June 17 - and they have no intention of coming home empty-handed.

David, 33, said: "It's nice to get some recognition. Tibo has gone well.

"Malcolm and I live in Dennistoun and whenever we wanted to go out for a drink and a decent meal we always had to go into the Merchant City.

"We just went for it despite having no experience. Before we opened Tibo I was a civil servant and Malcolm was a windsurfing instructor."

Tibo attracts a diverse range of clientele - and diners are also starting to migrate from the South Side and West End.

Celebrity customers include Franz Ferdinand singer Alex Kapranos and Channel Four supremo Stuart Cosgrove.

David added: "Alex comes in quite regularly and has a meal and a few drinks. And Stuart is a regular too. He is very supportive of Tibo."

Next month Tibo will host two events as part of the Glasgow International Jazz Festival.
