A LONER who killed a 62-year-old woman in a case which shocked Scotland has died in prison.

Donald McMillan suffocated hillwalker Helen Torbet, who was staying at his parents' guesthouse in Wester Ross, and buried her body in a shallow grave.

The 45-year-old, jailed for life in 1994 following the Highlands' biggest police hunt, was found dead in his cell yesterday at Saughton jail in Edinburgh. It's believed he died of natural causes.

Former Army tank driver McMillan killed Mrs Torbet as he tried to rape her.

His parents were in Aberdeen at the time and he and regular guest Mrs Torbet, of Busby, were alone in the guesthouse near Loch Duich.

McMillan buried her body in the garden, where it lay for 10 months.

He made up an elaborate story of how Mrs Torbet had driven from the guesthouse with another man, leaving her car behind.

But police closed in on him when a walker found some of Mrs Torbet's possessions in undergrowth.
