THE director of Glasgow's successful bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games has been rewarded with an honorary degree.

Derek Casey was joined by astronaut Bill McArthur at the Strathclyde University ceremony at the Barony Hall.

Mr Casey, who was made a Doctor of the university, served as interim chief executive on the bid organising committee before stepping down to return to voluntary work in international sport.

As well as securing the Commonwealth Games - the second largest multi-sports event in the world - for Glasgow he was responsible for the development of world class training programmes for British sportsmen and women in the run up to the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Mr McArthur was made a Doctor of Science at Strathclyde University.

He became an astronaut in 1991 and has completed four space flights. He is currently the manager of NASA's Safety and Mission Assurance Office.

He also supports the Scottish Space School, which encourage young people in science, maths, engineering and technology subjects, and has its residential programme at the university.

They were joined by Frances McMenamin QC, who was made a Doctor of the university along with Jeff Fergus, a Strathclyde graduate who in 1976 became the youngest ever board director of the US-based Leo Burnett advertising agency.
