LibDem sports spokesman Ross Finnie is calling for tough spending controls to be imposed now to avoid a large overspend in the next five years.
Freedom Of Information requests revealed the city council and Scottish Government have spent more than £1.2 million on consultants and managers in two years.
The details show Glasgow City Council has already spent £681,885 and the Scottish Government has spent £599,035.
The total budget for the Commonwealth Games has already increased by £80million, with he government announcing extra cash.
Mr Finnie said: “History tells us that the budgets for staging massive international sports events will soar unless every aspect of expenditure is rigorously controlled.
“The Scottish Government has already been forced to dig deep and find an extra £80million.
“That’s an awful lot of taxpayers’ money in these tough times So it’s absolutely vital that the Scottish Government and Glasgow City Council keep on top of every pound spent.”
The government paid £60,034 towards an HR specialist and the Organising Committee spending £516,596 on expert advisors. The city council spent £245,885 on consultants and £436,000 on managers.
Mr Finnie added: “Blowing more than £1.2million on consultants and PR in the first two years isn’t a good sign that ministers and councillors are focusing on the essentials and getting their spending priorities right.”
Last month Audit Scotland warned organisers to keep a tight rein on finances, monitor their budgets continually and pull together a definitive list of the risks that could threaten the event and the associated costs.
The Games currently has a budget of £454m, increased last month from the original £373m.
