Brian was well-known in the trade, working home and abroad in newspapers and public relations.
A former pupil of Glasgow Academy, he wrote the first page of a long career when he was a teenage copy boy on the Daily Express, where his father Bernard was chief photographer.
Brian later worked on the Daily Mail and Sunday Mail in the city, with the Daily Express in Manchester and, while living in Kenya, on the East African Standard.
He joined the Evening Times in 1976 as a sub-editor, continuing to show his versatility by covering events as news reporter, property columnist and business editor.
Added to this demanding schedule, he also represented his colleagues as Father of the Chapel of the National Union of Journalists.
Brian took early retirement in 1994. He fought cancer in the last year of his life with characteristic courage and humour.
He is survived by partner Jane Horner, children Mandy, Debbie and Steve, and five grandchildren.
