BIGOTED behaviour will not be tolerated at this weekend's Orange Order parades, police have warned.

Around 12,000 marchers from across the UK and Ireland will take part in marches through Glasgow and Larkhall on Saturday.

It is expected thousands more will join the rallies at Glasgow Green and Coronation Park in Larkhall.

And police have issued a warning to those taking part that they will take a tough stance on sectarian behaviour and drinking in public.

The warning has been backed by the Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland.

Anyone caught for either offences will be issued with a £40 fixed penalty ticket by police.

Kevin Smith, Assistant Chief Constable of Territorial Policing, said: "My priority and that of my officers on Saturday is public safety. We want to make sure people can go about their daily business without too much inconvenience.

"Excessive drunkenness and disorderly behaviour will not be tolerated and I would remind people that drinking in public places is not allowed.

"Officers will make full use of antisocial behaviour fixed penalty tickets to tackle the consumption of alcohol and urinating in public places."

Strathclyde Police has been working closely with the Grand Orange Lodge and event organisers to ensure that any disruption on the day is kept to a minimum.

However it is expected there will be considerable impact on traffic in both areas, particularly in Glasgow City Centre around George Square, High Street and the Saltmarket.

Road diversions will be put in place in both Glasgow and Larkhall.
