A Glasgow hotel has closed its doors for the last time – to pave the way for student flats.

The 100-bedroom Park Inn Glasgow, which has had four different owners since it opened in 2000, closed after a 30-day consultation.

Construction workers have already started boarding up the building, beside Buchanan Bus Station on Port Dundas Street.

The building's owner, Realstar Group, had submitted a proposal to shut the hotel at the start of last month to turn it into student accommodation.

The move sparked job fears among the hotel's 60 staff. However, Park Inn's management company, Rezidor Hotel Group, which is part of the Carlson travel and hotel group, said 42 of the 60 had secured other jobs.

A Rezidor spokeswoman said: "Rezidor has done its utmost to support the staff and , wherever possible, offered roles in other hotels of the group's portfolio.

"We also worked closely with the local JobCentre and other recruitment agencies to assist the employees in their search for alternative employment. As a result, 70% have jobs."

A statement on the Park Inn website and a sign on the hotel's front door confirmed it had ceased trading and was no longer accepting bookings for people wanting to stay.

The Park Inn was formerly Langs Hotel and opened in 2000 as the city's first boutique hotel.

It was owned by John Brannan and his wife Bridget until 2006, when Northern Irish property group WG Mitchell bought it.

Rezidor took over as management company in 2007 and rebranded it Park Inn.

In November last year Realstar Group bought the hotel for around £8million.

No one from Realstar Group was available for comment.
