GLASGOW city centre was transformed into a desert island to mark the launch of a special summer programme.

Shoppers were invited to take a hot coal challenge underneath palm trees in Buchanan Street ahead of the start of Xscape Island at Xscape Braehead.

Games, entertainment, dance workshops and competitions will be held daily at the centre from tomorrow.

Xscape Braehead has lured nearly 30,000 more customers over 16-days of summer compared to the same period last year, which bosses have put down to the recent wet weather.

The increase marks a 21% rise between the end of June and July 10.

Now they are launching Xscape Island to encourage even more visitors.

Colin Reid, marketing boss, said: "We have seen a dramatic increase in visitor numbers due to the rain.

"We want to help families remain upbeat while we maintain this growth, and are launching this promotion.

"The centre will be transformed into a fantastic castaway tropical island, with a real sand beach and three weeks of free themed activities for all the family."

Clyde 1 will broadcast live there next Friday, July 27, and visitors get the chance to win 'a grand in the sand'.
