A man has appeared in court charged with the murder 26 years ago of 16-year-old Elaine Doyle in Greenock.

John Docherty, 48, from the town, appeared at Greenock Sheriff Court. He is also accused of theft.

He made no plea during the private hearing and was remanded in custody.

Elaine died on her way home from a disco in Greenock on June 1, 1986. Her body was found the next day in a lane off Ardgowan Street, less than 50 yards from her home.

Strathclyde Police launched a fresh appeal over the death in 2011.
