Michael Jamieson claimed nerves played their part in him being beaten into second place by fellow Scot Ross Murdoch in the 200 metres breaststroke heat at the 2014 Commonwealth Games at Tollcross Swimming Centre.

Murdoch set a Games record of 2:08.78 with Calum Tait coming in third to make it a Scottish one-two-three ahead of the final tonight.

Afterwards Olympic silver medallist Jamieson said: "I was really nervous in the last couple of days and at the start of this week I was getting worse and worse in the water because I was tightening up and letting the nerves get the better of me.

"But I feel a lot better after that. That will flush everything out and I can just chill out now. I have a lot of work to do tonight."

Murdoch, however, insists he still has "more in the tank" after being inspired by the earlier 400m freestyle heat in which Stephen Milne beat fellow Scots Dan Wallace and Robbie Renwick in an exciting race.

He said: "Watching the 400m freestyle boys Dan, Robbie and Stephen come top three in their heat with the crowd going wild was the best thing ever and I wanted that for myself. I did it, and it was something I will remember for the rest of my life.

"I feel as if I have more in my tank. It was a comfortable 200. I took the first and last 50 really comfortably - I just really worked the middle 100 and I think I am going to come back and go faster."
