GLASGOW is stepping up its bid to stop violence against women in the city - and wants to hear your views.

The Glasgow Violence Against Women Partnership wants to find out the views of women and men to form a new strategy to tackle the violence and help plan future campaigns.

It is the first such survey to be carried out by a Scottish council.

Respondents are asked to rate how strongly they agree with statements, such as "Pornography isn't that harmful," and, "Alcohol and drugs cause men to be violent to their partners".

Councillor James Coleman, chairman of the Partnership, said: "Our work provides evidence of the lack of public knowledge on the dangers of violence against women, such as how to spot potential domestic abuse within other relationships.

"However, it does not provide us with the statistical data and factual analysis we need to improve our services.

"Like many other cities throughout the world, we know violence against women in Glasgow is still hidden from public view, and we need to change that."

The survey is part of the Community Safety Glasgow Violence Against Women Partnership's 16 Days Of Action programme.

The launch coincided with the UN's International Day For The Elimination Of Violence Against Women and will finish on International Human Rights Day on December 10.

White Ribbon Scotland, which urges men to play a part in challenging attitudes, is helping with the survey.

The group also promotes the requirement for men to play a positive role in speaking out and taking individual and collective action. They are also urged to wear a white ribbon.

Glasgow is working towards becoming a city with White Ribbon status.

Callum Hendry, White Ribbon co-ordinator, said: "The vast majority of men do not commit acts of violence against women, but recent attitude surveys show a notable percentage still condone acts of violence - such as domestic abuse or rape - through victim-blaming."

The council has urged people from all backgrounds to fill in the survey.

It is available online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CSGVAWsurvey until January 6.
