MORE THAN 800 cases of missing patients have been recorded at Glasgow's hospitals in the last four years.

The majority of the 856 incidents recorded by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) since 2010 were from wards which treat people with mental illnesses.

Two cases were also recorded from Yorkhill children's hospital.

Dr Jean turner, former executive of the Scottish Patients' Association said the figures were astonishing, and said they raised concerns for patient safety.

Mental health bosses from the health board said in the majority of cases, patients would return to wards themselves or would be brought back by police.

Dykebar hospital recorded the highest number of runaways, 276, over the four year period while the second highest number, 236, were reported from Leverndale Hospital in Crookston.

The number of cases of absconding patients has more than halved in the last 4 years, with 226 reported in 2010, falling to 101 in 2014.
