Scots have unveiled their funniest, cringeworthy stories in a Tennent's Lager survey to celebrate Awkward Moments Day which takes place tomorrow.

More than 95 per cent of the 250 people surveyed said that their most entertaining awkward moment had been experienced in their local.

And those punters who were out for a beer but found themselves in hot water were quick to share their funny faux-pas.

From bumping into the ex and not remembering their name; to turning up in the same outfit as your pal - there was no shortage of anecdotes to be found on Scotland's streets.

Ranked in order of the most 'em-bar-assing', situations included:

1. Meeting an acquaintance or ex and trying to cover up the fact you can't remember their name (29%)

2. Waving at someone who wasn't waving at you in the first place (21%)

3. Asking to buy someone a drink before being met with selective deafness (or a downright no) (17%)

4. Arriving too early, or at the wrong time, and desperately trying - but failing - to use your phone to look busy (12%)

5. Turning up dressed the same as your mate (8%)

Other laughable awkward moments which rated in the survey included taking the mick out of someone who just won't get a round in (6%); playing gooseberry to a loved-up couple (4%); unwittingly sporting a loo roll addition to your shoes as you leave the toilet (2%); and beginning to chat someone up - before realising that they aren't the sex you first thought them to be (1%).

In response, Tennent's will offer advice on its Facebook page throughout the day to help pub-goers recover effortlessly, whatever takes place.

Jane Cannon, of Tennent's Lager, said: "There's nowhere better than the pub to have a laugh with friends - but it's also the place most likely to create unintentionally funny situations.

"The types of things revealed in our survey are the toe-curling moments that almost everyone can relate to and we thought it would be fun to celebrate the humour in them.

"We'll be offering up advice online and asking pub-goers to share their stories too."
