DOZENS of motorists and pedestrians were quizzed by officers hunting a rapist.

Exactly one week after a 20-year-old woman was brutally attacked, police returned to the scene in Uddingston.

Plain clothed detectives and uniform officers stopped and interviewed motorists and pedestrians near Uddingston Train Station and surrounding streets last night in a bid to glean vital clues.

Police said a dog walker who was spotted close to the scene of the sex attack could hold vital clues to help catch the fiend.

It happened at around 10.15pm last Tuesday as the victim walked home from the train station.

The rapist approached her from behind and forced her into a wooded area close to Castle Gate.

He is described as a white man, between 30 and 50-years-old, approximately 5ft 9in, wearing dark clothing including a hood.

He is described as having red hair and red facial hair.

Police also said a man was seen running in Kylepark Drive at around 10.40pm and urged him to come forward.

Detective Inspector Tom Carty, of the Specialist Crime Division, said:"We are doing everything we can to find the culprit.

"Incidents like this are extremely rare particularly in this area, however, we need help from members of the public who may have vital information to assist with the investigation.

"We urge anyone who was in the vicinity of Uddingston Train Station, Main Street, Castle Avenue and Castle Gate between 9.15pm and 10.30pm on Tuesday March 24 to contact police.

"In particular we would like to hear from a man who was walking with his dog in Main Street Uddingston near to the train station about 9.30pm.

"And also a couple walking in Castle Avenue, Bothwell, who may be able to provide information."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Motherwell Police Office on 101.
