Three more victims of the Romanian nightclub fire have died, bringing the total death toll from the fire to 44.

The medical director of the state burns hospital, Cristian Nitescu said a man succumbed to his injuries late on Saturday.

Mediafax news agency reported two other patients died early on Sunday at the Floreasca Emergency Hospital, including a Turkish man studying in Romania, and a woman who worked at the club's bar.

Nine deaths were announced on Saturday, the highest number for a single day since the fire broke out on October 30 at the Colectiv nightclub after a spark from a pyrotechnics show ignited foam decor.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta and his Cabinet resigned on Wednesday after mass protests which have continued.

Mr Campeanu said 109 other people still remained in hospital, 48 of them in a serious or critical condition.

Late on Saturday, about 2,000 protesters gathered in Bucharest for the fifth consecutive evening, waving Romanian flags and calling for better governance and an end to corruption.

"The political class is inefficient and corrupt. We need a government of technocrats or experts," said Cristina Lotrea, a 22-year-old sociology researcher.
