SPORTS fans are in for a treat with British gymnastics stars Max Whitlock, Daniel Purvis and Claudia Fragapane set to compete at the 2016 Glasgow World Cup at Emirates Arena on March 12.

It marks a triumphant return for the trio who were part of the successful Great Britain squad that thrilled spectators at the World Gymnastics Championships last autumn.

Max, 23, made history by becoming the first British man to win world gymnastics gold with victory on the pommel horse in front of a packed SSE Hydro.

Both Max and Daniel, 25, helped the Great Britain men's team to silver at the world championships, while Claudia, 18, was among the bronze medal-winning women's side.

"Competing in Glasgow has always been very special to me and the World Championships last year was incredible and historic not just for me, but for the whole British team," said Max.

"I'm really looking forward to being back in the city and starting 2016 positively. Everyone knows how huge this year is and the World Cup is a perfect event to test myself against a really good field of international gymnasts – I can't wait."

The Glasgow World Cup has sold out every year since first being held at Emirates Arena in 2012.

It offers the opportunity to see 18 of the world's best gymnasts in action only a few months before the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Daniel, who won gold for Team Scotland at Glasgow 2014, said he is looking forward to competing in front of a home crowd.

"Hopefully lots of people will have watched us at the World Championships and been inspired by what we achieved," he said. "The World Cup is a special event and this year's line-up is world class so I'm hoping for another sell-out crowd to cheer on the British gymnasts."

Four-time Commonwealth Games champion Claudia added: "With the Olympics not far away it's important to start the year off well and continue to prove myself. The World Cup is a very special event and Glasgow is a brilliant city to compete in – I can't wait to see everyone."

Also included in the star-studded line-up is world and European medallists Kelly Simm (Great Britain), MyKayla Skinner (USA), Lieke Wevers (Netherlands) and Maria Kharenkova (Russia).

Councillor Archie Graham, depute leader of Glasgow Life and chair of Glasgow Life, said: "Last year's World Championships set a new benchmark for gymnastics and we are determined to build on that success by once again delivering an event that showcases Glasgow on the global stage."
