THE number of public sector workers in Glasgow has increased again following a big fall from five years ago.

In 2010 there were 81,000 men and women employed in the public sector, including council, NHS, government colleges and universities.

The number dropped by more than 20% to 63,000 in two years later but the latest figures show levels back up to more than 80,000.

Glasgow City Council has suffered job losses year after year with a reduced budget.

The latest round will see £130m cut over two years and an estimated 1500 jobs to be lost.

One reason given for recent fluctuation has been, while councils and public bodies have paid off staff to cope with budget cuts some banks have been taken into public ownership increasing the number of staff in statistics.

Having laid off many staff following the financial crash in 2008 banks have been taking workers on again.

Private sector employment also fluctuated from 173,000 in 2005 down to 166,000 in 2012, then last year back up to 176,000

The most common employment category in Glasgow was public admin education and health with more than one third working in those sectors.

Distribution, hotels and restaurants accounted for 19% while banking finance and insurance employed 17% of staff working in the city.
