A RARE Scottish football medal is going up for auction in Glasgow.
The league winners’ medal from 1931/32 is from the only Motherwell FC team to be crowned Scottish Champions.
John McMenemy was part of the team that finished five points ahead of Rangers and broke the Old Firm stranglehold on the trophy of the previous 28 years.
The auction at McTear’s on Friday will be a family affair with one of John’s father, Jimmy’s Celtic medals also for sale.
It is the Steelmen player’s medal that is exciting auctioneers though, given it is the club’s biggest achievement.
Brian Clements, McTear’s managing director, said: “Scottish football is synonymous with Celtic and Rangers but of course other teams have been champions.
"In Motherwell’s case this has happened only once in the club’s history and to have one of these medals coming to auction is a real coup for football fans and collectors.
“This is a rare item and we expect there to be significant interest in this piece of sporting memorabilia.”
The nine carat gold medal is expected to reach up to £2000
Jimmy’s medal, from a Glasgow Charity Cup win in 1915, is expected to reach a similar price as is another from Celtic forward Alec Thomson who played 451 matches for the hoops.
The highest price is hoped for from the sale of a medal from Celtic’s first ever cup win in the Club’s inaugural season estimated to sell for between £10,000 and £20,000.
