A shopkeeper has told of his shock at being robbed at knifepoint in his Glasgow newsagents.

Police are hunting for the robber after Rana Naveed was threatened with a knife and a hammer and forced to hand over a four-figure sum of cash.

The 35-year-old was robbed at his shop, Freddie's Newsagents, on Carmyle Avenue in Mount Vernon at about 11.20am on Tuesday.

Mr Naveed, who has owned Freddie's, which contains a post office, for more than six years, said: "I was just standing behind my counter as usual when I heard somebody coming into the shop.

"He had a knife and a hammer and he hit the hammer down on the counter and said 'give me money'.

"I just went to the safe deposit box and gave him money and then he ran off. He had a mask on so I couldn't see his face."

The shopkeeper called the police soon after in a state of shock.

He added: "This is actually the first time anything like this has ever happened to me. They usually target post offices because of the money, but I've been here for six and a half years and it's never happened before, so it was a shock.

"I was very afraid, he had the knife and the hammer and I just did what he said. I just gave him the money."

Police say the suspect is described as about 5ft 10 in and of medium build with a local accent.

He was wearing a black skip cap, a balaclava, a black jacket with a hood, black trousers and dark shoes.

Officers are studying CCTV images and have appealed to witnesses to come forward.

DC Neil Guy, of the Community Investigation Unit based at Govan, said: “We are analysing available CCTV and conducting door-to-door enquiries, however, given the time of day at which the incident took place, we are hoping there may be more witnesses who have yet to come forward.”

“This was daylight robbery involving weapons which he used to threaten the shopkeeper. It is crucial that we trace the man responsible and hold him to account for his actions.”
