A Scottish Labour councillor in North Lanarkshire has been charged with alleged child pornography offences.

David Fagan is scheduled to appear in court later this week and has been suspended from the party.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "A 52 year-old man was arrested on Wednesday 7 September 2016.  He was released on an undertaking to appear at Airdrie Sheriff Court on Thursday 6 October 2016."

Fagan represents Airdrie South on the Labour-run local authority and sits on a number of key council bodies.

He is listed a member of the council committees of Education, Policy and Resources and Housing and Social Work Services.

He used to work for ex-Labour MSP Karen Whitefield and was formerly vice chair of Strathclyde Partnership for Transport.

His register of interest states that he owns a house with his wife and is a member of the GMB trade union.

Fagan, who was first elected in 2003, also holds the part-time post of advisor to the Director of the School of Work Based Education at Glasgow Caledonian University.

A spokesman for the Crown Office said: “The Procurator Fiscal has received a report concerning a 52 year old male in connection with alleged incidents said to have occurred between 25 and 30 June 2016.

“The report remains under consideration.”

A Scottish Labour spokesman confirmed Fagan had been suspended from the party.

A council spokesman said: “This is a matter for the courts.”
