THOUSANDS of people packed George Square to see the Festive Season start with an explosion of colour.
Almost 280,000 people wanted to be present to see the historic heart of the city lit up by new Christmas Lights
But only 16,000 were lucky enough to secure coveted briefs for the heartwarming Glasgow Loves Christmas event.
The lights which had lit up George Square for more than 25 years had reached the end of their natural lives.
They were originally designed for the city's 1990 European City of Culture celebrations.
In their place this year is a stunning new display featuring 250 individual lights, 10 giant Christmas trees, 100 snowflakes and 13,000 lights decorating the Scott Monument.
They are more energy efficient, are brighter and capable of more functions.
The lights were switched on by Glasgow’s Lord Provost, Sadie Doherty after entertainment from Radio Clyde before the event concluded with fireworks being set off from the roof of the City Chambers.
Sadie Docherty said: “The Christmas Lights switch on is the moment Glasgow starts counting down until the big day. We have amazing new lights and a brilliant line-up of events to welcome people to the heart of Glasgow in the lead to Christmas. Whether your visit is for shopping, for enjoying the festive spirit or for some of the great entertainment and events on offer, we are looking forward to welcoming you.”
