The mother of murdered school girl Paige Doherty yesterday called for child killers to spend a minimum of 35 years behind bars.

Pamela Munro reportedly made the comments following the news Paige's murderer John Leathem has had his term reduced on appeal.

Though originally the killer was jailed for life with a minimum of 27 years, last week appeal court judge Lord Turnbull decided he would be eligible for parole after 23 years.

According to the Daily Record, Pamela said:  “When I got the phone call, I was just thinking to myself, ‘How can that happen?’

“How can somebody justify killing a child as brutally as he killed Paige and say, ‘It’s not as bad as this, or as bad as that so we’re going to reduce it?’”

Leathem inflicted inflicted more than 146 injuries on the 15-year-old's body.

The Clydebank mum said went on to call for a minimum punishment for "excessive killing" such as the murder of children to be set at 35 years in prison.

She added: "Paige hasn’t got justice. I believe if somebody who commits the crime can get an appeal, the victim should have that option as well.”
