A DRUG driver with amphetamines hidden in his shoes drove to a garage in an uninsured car to ask staff for a job.

David Graham, who appeared in the dock for sentencing at Glasgow Sheriff Court, was caught by police after driving through Glasgow’s south side while under the influence of drink or drugs.

Around 5pm on October 17, 2016, Graham pulled up at the Mini garage on Kilmarnock Road to enquire about work.

The court heard witnesses watched him climb out of the driver’s side of the car despite being “unsteady on his feet”.

As he spoke to staff to ask if any jobs were available, witnesses from the Mini garage noticed Graham had dilated pupils and so “sent him on his way”.

Later that day, around 6.50pm, police spotted a car being driven along Tinto Road with its headlights off.

On approaching the vehicle, they also saw it had no registration plate.

The vehicle was driven by Graham, who police witnesses also said was unsteady on his feet and so he was arrested.

In the police car, the 40-year-old tried to dispose of 13g of white powder, later found to be the Class B drug amphetamine, he had hidden in his shoes.

After processing and searching him, officers discovered that Graham, of Pentland Road, had no insurance and the car he had been driving did not have a valid MOT certificate.

Police also found that, at some point during his drive around the south side, on Kilmarnock Road, Tinto Road and Ledi Road, Graham had reversed into a stationary car.

He drove off without leaving his details for the other driver.

In mitigation, Sheriff Kelly was told that Graham is now involved with mental health charity SAMH, from which he is receiving support.

Sheriff Kelly deferred sentencing for four months with a new court date of July 19.

The sheriff said this would allow Graham to undergo assessment and treatment of mental health issues.

His bail was continued and he is disqualified from driving.
