TRIBUTES have been paid to Celtic legend and true gentleman John McStay.

After news of the former scout’s passing, friends of the family and fans of the club took to social media to pay their respects.

It is believed John died after a long battle with illness.

Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney, who McStay scouted for the club, was one of the several people to take to social media and pay tribute.

He said: “The man who made it all possible for me.

“A true gent.

“Thoughts with all the family.”

The Tweet was responded to by McStay’s grandson, John, who said: “Thanks KT.

“He was very proud of you.”

Mary McGowan reached out to John junior, an academy coach at Celtic, over Twitter and said: “He was a great man, so proud of you all.

“Was honoured to call him a friend.”

More kind words were shared over Facebook and Twitter about the father of three ex-Celtic players Paul, Willie and Raymond.

Tracey Cambell-Hynd said on Twitter: “RIP John McStay - lovely man.

“Glad, however, that Paul made it home just in time to say goodbye.

“Thoughts are with the family.”

Gerry Guiff said: “I knew John outside football, he was a kind thoughtful gentleman.

“Condolences to the McStay family.

“May you rest in peace John."

Matt McGlone said: “Saddened John McStay has passed away.

“Father to Paul,Willie & Raymond who all wore the Hoops.

“All his boys were with him and are in our thoughts.”

Pat Burt said: “Celtic family in every sense.”

The McStay family have been involved with Celtic FC for over 100 years with Jimmy McStay who first joined the club in 1912 and went on to manage the club in 1940.

Along with the announcement of John’s passing on Friday from Celtic, Peter Lawwell, the club’s chief executive said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the McStay family at this sad time.

“Paul and Willie McStay gave many years of faithful service as players to Celtic Football Club and John McStay was instrumental in their love of the team.”
