A worker who was seriously injured after a fatal gas explosion in Newmains is 'fighting like a trooper'.

Courtney Clinton, from Motherwell, has been fighting for his life in hospital following the blast at a former convent.

His brother Ricky Clinton said he has the 'heart of a lion' and encouraged people to keep praying for his recovery.

He wrote: "Courtney Clinton, heart of a lion, keep fighting son love you so much."

Several social media users have reached out to the family to offer their prayers for his speedy recovery.

The terrifying blast claimed the life of a 23-year-old worker, who has not been named, and injured several other people.

Victims were described as fleeing from the scene covered in blood. 

It is understood the workers had been clearing asbestos from the building.

The centre is owned by the Catholic Church and closed due to financial constraints.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "We can confirm a 23-year-old man succumbed to his injuries in hospital on Monday, October 9 2017.

"A 26-year-old man remains in hospital in a serious condition.

"A joint investigation is ongoing with police and the Healthy and Safety Executive and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
