The iconic five star Blythswood Square Hotel in Glasgow city centre has an added buzz thanks to the arrival of 180,000 new guests.

Executive Head Chef, Zoltan Szabo has instructed for three bee hives to be installed on the roof of the hotel not only in a bid to help the environment but to generate its very own honey.

What’s more, the landmark city centre hotel is raffling off a large jar of this locally produced nectar to aid Glasgow Children’s Hospital in time for Christmas.

Zoltan who is passionate about the work of honey bees, was keen to welcome these winged guests to the hotel in a bid to increase the hotel’s already strong eco credentials.  A honey bee visits 50 to 100 flowers and plants during a collection trip, in this case the bees would help pollinate Blythswood Gardens, Kelvingrove Park and the Forth and Clyde Canal amongst other venues.  The Hotel which has pledged to support Glasgow Children’s Hospital throughout 2017 is raffling off a large jar of honey until 12 December with all proceeds going to the children’s charity.

Blythswood Square’s Executive Head Chef, Zoltan Szabo said: “I am delighted to welcome the bees to our hotel and many of our guests have already enjoyed the honey coming directly from these hives.

“I am also thrilled we are able to contribute to the local environment in such a positive way as well as supporting the work of Glasgow’s Children’s Hospital in the run up to Christmas. We are always looking at ways to support local worthwhile causes and we thought our bees provided a unique opportunity to do something different.

“We are encouraging guests and visitors to the Hotel to get involved in our raffle – it really is a money can’t buy prize and something very special to enjoy over the festive period. We would urge anyone passing by the Hotel in the coming days to pay us a visit and take part.”

The Head Chef is also using the honey within the hotels enviable food menu.

Zoltan added: “Honey is the only food to contain ‘pinocembrin’ which is an antioxidant that improves brain function. It is contains all of the substances needed to sustain life, including enzymes, water, minerals and vitamins so I am very honoured to be featuring this produce in our menus across the day.”
