A SERIAL thief stole a woman's handbag which she left unattended in a cafe, a court has heard.

David McCartny, 40, appeared in the dock at Glasgow Sheriff Court for sentencing after admitting to two separate offences.

McCartny, of Dumbarton Road, accepted that he stole the handbag containing bank cards and money on September 19, last year at The Whiteinch Centre.

The court heard McCartny picked up the handbag which was unattended and left the cafe. He was chased and the handbag was returned to the woman.

He also admitted stealing items including shoes, books and picture frames from an unlocked car on Fore Street, Scotstoun on September 22, last year.

The victim of the theft witnessed McCartny opening the boot of her white BMW at around 12.40am and called police. They later found him with the goods.

He also admitted being found in a vehicle in Primrose Street without having lawful authority to be there and that it may be reasonably inferred that he intended to commit theft there.

Sentencing sheriff Gerard Bonnar tagged him for 188 days. He also placed him under supervision for a year. In addition, McCartny will complete 140 hours of unpaid work in the community.
