LABOUR wants to double the clothing grant for disadvantaged pupils in Glasgow’s schools.

The move is part of the party’s alternative budget proposals it is presenting today.

The ideas also include a care leavers dividend fund worth at least £500 to every care leaver in the city.

It wants to set aside cash to investigate congestion charging in Glasgow city centre and a £10m capital investment fund to alleviate congestion in the city.

Councillors are voting today on the SNP budget proposals which are expected to be approved with a deal with Green councillors.

Labour said its alternative proposals put tackling inequality, promoting fairness and justice at the heart of the budget.

It wants the clothing grant to more than double form £52 to £130, the highest in Scotland.

Frank McAveety, Labour group leader, said: “These are bold and radical proposals from Glasgow Labour that puts justice and fairness at their heart. Glaswegians are ambitious for their communities and their City. Labour’s plan is the only plan to match that ambition.

“We recognise that those young people who are leaving care face all sorts of disadvantages – which we saw just the other day in terms of their educational attainment. This is a proposal for real action that will give them a helping hand when they are starting out on their own.”

“Glasgow Labour ensured that over 95% of parents eligible for the School Clothing Grant received it. Now we are going one step further and helping those hard-pressed parents and carers by giving them an extra £78 per child.”
