THE star of Mrs Brown’s Boys has shared heartwarming words of support with the Pavilion as the iconic theatre faces two months of closure following last week’s devastating Sauchiehall Street fire.

Replying back to a tweet from the Evening Times on the news, Brendan O’Carroll said to general manager Iain Gordon on Tuesday: “Such a pity - however I’ll bet Iain already has plans for a spectacular re-opening! We believe in you Iain xx.”

O’Carroll, 62 - who portrays foul-mouthed matriarch Agnes Brown in the smash-hit BBC series - first got his big break with Mrs Brown’s Boys when it appeared at the Pavilion in the late 1990s.

After the thinly-attended first night of his first play, with no advance bookings and disaster looming, huge audiences ended up appearing for subsequent shows on the strength of word of mouth and the Pavilion quickly became known as “The Home of Mrs Brown’s Boys.”

Glasgow Times:

As reported by the Evening Times, the theatre has appealed to council bosses and the Scottish Government for help after being told it must close for two months while work gets underway to demolish nearby fire-ravaged buildings.

Glasgow City Council confirmed on Monday that the block in Sauchiehall Street that was hit by last Thursday’s blaze is to be razed to the ground for safety reasons.

Glasgow Times:

The buildings affected are from number 92 to 106 which stretches from The Works shop up to the junction at Hope Street and also includes Victoria’s nightclub, Specsavers, Holland & Barrett, Savers, Greggs and a number of other retailers.

The street and the roads around the site are expected to be sealed off for around two months, causing disruption for public transport and motorists.

The Pavilion has already had to cancel five shows and according to general manager Iain Gordon could be facing major losses if upcoming show, Celtic the Musical, is unable to be staged elsewhere.

The show starts on April 18 and runs for a month and takes in around half a million pounds.

At the height of the blaze on Thursday morning, more than 120 firefighters were at the scene, tackling flames that started in the roof of the building which houses Victoria's nightclub.

The SFRS said it was one of the biggest incidents the service has had to deal with and officers remained at the scene over the weekend to damp down the site.
